Week 11 Reflections
I really enjoyed the readings and videos from this week. And that was especially true of the article "Attitude on Money". So what are my attitudes on money? I remember many years ago I was watching a BYUI devotional by my husband's aunt and after hers another professor came on talking about money. I knew my husband had this man as a teacher and really liked him so I listened to it and I think about it often. He talked about how God cares about how we use our money. It is the love of money that is not good. If all we do is just to make money, then that isn't great, but we DO need money to live. So how do I use money in my life?
He made another point that I loved. He said that the way we treat money and giving it to those who need it will be the same no matter how much money we have. So if don't have a lot of money and we are looking for ways to help still, when we DO have more money, we will continue to do that. But if we don't care to help those when we have small amounts, we won't when we have large amounts of money. And that is important I think. Giving money isn't a natural thing that happens when you suddenly have a lot of money. It is something we do because we want to. So I really try to show myself and God that no matter how much we have at the moment, I want to help and find ways that we can do that no matter how much we have.
And while we have more money now then we did at the time I heard it, I have found that we have always had enough for what we NEED. As we have done what we can to control ourselves and our spending and giving, that God has helped it to work out. And that is so cool. So we really try to live within our means and to save and to give as often as we can. And that has blessed us immensely.
Two things I really learned too from this article are one, that we aren't meant to be poor when we follow righteous principles. That doesn't mean we won't ebb and flow with money, because we will. Especially during harder times or times of education and saving up for something bigger. But we aren't meant to stay down. And the second thing I thought of was when he was talking about the parable of the talents I realized that God wasn't necessarily trying to say we have to go and make X amount of money, but that we can't sit in fear and not take risks in life. Life is full of risks and chances to be taken, and we are meant to take them. Which when I say out loud seems obvious, but it really hit me because starting a business is full of risks and they scare me. But what if that is what God wants me to do? What if I need to try, and maybe even fail? That just shows I had faith and courage.
