Week 12 Reflections

This week we read the article "What's a Business For?" and it was very insightful. Some things it points out right at the beginning is how important virtue and integrity are. There are so many instances in the recent path of people being dishonest and screwing up lots of companies around the country due to their selfishness and greed. When people are honest and having integrity and feel a need to be ethical and fair in their choices then everyone gets treated fairly and no illegal activity is taking place, for any reason, at any time. And everyone benefits from that. Plus, when people inflate numbers in their company or do little tricks to make their business appear a certain way, it affects the economy on the way up and on the way down from those lies and exaggerations.
The real existence for businesses is to help people progress and to give the good things of life to those around the world and make them accessible to all. The way business is set up can help to spur those things and make them competitive, but ultimately we should be just as concerned about measuring the consumer and benefits to them as we do the people selling. That is what business is all about.
Some ways they talk about how to fix the current system is to keep the current energy but to tweak it so that half of the boards are manned by employees who contribute man hours and skill to making it all work. We can't just ask those who are investing with their capital. They only care about their money and getting it back and more. We need a more democratic approach to business and make sure we are doing things WELL. Making money is only part of it all. I also really liked how they mentioned how European businesses how they have 5 week vacations and mandated paternity/maternity leave and how they were only working 35 hour weeks and productivity went up. It makes you really consider why our businesses are run in such a different way. I wonder if we could apply these same kind of benefits and have higher expectations for when people ARE at work and get more done during less hours. This is one of many hopes I have for my future business.
