Week 2 Reflections
- Why do you think Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams?
I believe that Randy Pausch was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams because he wanted to and he worked hard to get an education and rub shoulders with people who would open more doors for him. Because of his efforts in these areas, opportunities came up and because he had dreams that he thought of and remembered, he recognized related opportunities and things that came up in his life that he then SEIZED and made possible and worked to make them make his dreams come true.
I love this, because often I think we view life where we are victims of our circumstances and see things pass by and think it had to be that way, but I loved the way he really seized opportunities that passed by him and did what it took to achieve them. I need to be more proactive that way and expansive in the things I allow into my life. - Do you feel that dreaming is important? Why or why not?
This year I have been shown over and over how important dreaming is. We have to come up with dreams in order to really have direction in our lives. If we never dream, we will never imagine the possibilities that could come about in our lives and then when paths come along that could lead to those directions, we are more apt to recognize them and take them. Otherwise, we just float aimlessly in our lives and miss out on SO many opportunities. - Discuss at least one of your childhood dreams. Explain why you believe you can or cannot achieve this dream.
One of my main childhood dreams is to provide much needed healthcare for women in Africa. So many times I hear stories or see things on TV (like I did as a kid) where people just need access to life saving things we take for granted here. Vaccines, proper healthcare related to childbirth, etc. I remember seeing a whole program on women who get tears between the wall so their urinary tracts and birth canals and end up leaking urine and get cast out of their villages and a simple procedure can fix it (or ya know, just not marrying off children to then go and get pregnant by overbearing and older husbands that damage their bodies having children, as children) and then they can live their lives normally. I have always been so struck by how lucky I am this way as a white woman in America and I want to provide those kinds of things for women around the world whose only "mistake" was not getting to be born in a place like America like I did.
I have explored going into medical to make this possible, but have ultimately realized that isn't my path. But my husband is a Physician Assistant which could allow opportunities to still come my way, but I also hope to get involved with non-profits that provide these kinds of things, and hopefully have a company someday that we can incorporate charity into that allows us to provide funding and MAYBE I could be involved on the ground through that.
